Tyler Robinson has been formally charged with aggravated murder in the fatal shooting of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk, officials announced this morning.
Prosecutors in Utah County say they intend to seek the death penalty in what they describe as a politically motivated killing.
Robinson faces a total of nine felony charges, including obstruction of justice, witness tampering, felony discharge of a firearm, and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child.
The charges stem from the September 9 shooting that occurred during a private event in Provo, Utah, where Kirk was speaking.
“This case meets multiple aggravating factors under Utah law,” said Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray in a press conference this morning. “Mr. Robinson’s actions were not only deliberate and premeditated, but they were also carried out with the specific intent to silence political speech. That is unacceptable and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Investigators say DNA matching Robinson’s profile was found on the trigger of the AR-style rifle used in the attack. Authorities also recovered messages allegedly sent by Robinson—via text and on Discord—indicating he intended to kill Kirk, including one message that read: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”
Robinson is currently being held without bail in Utah County Jail. He made his initial court appearance virtually and has not yet entered a plea.
If convicted of aggravated murder with the alleged aggravating circumstances, Robinson could face capital punishment, which remains legal in Utah by firing squad, lethal injection, or alternative means depending on availability.
A preliminary hearing is expected within the coming weeks.
