Strong northwesterly winds and heavy rain is set to travel northwards up the South Island on Wednesday.

The MetService has a Strong Wind Warning in place for the Canterbury High Country during Wednesday when gusts in exposed locations could reach 130km/h.

Elsewhere strong northwesterly winds are expected for many parts of the eastern South Island from Southland to Marlborough.

Along with the windy weather, heavy rain and thunderstorms will move up the west of the South Island.

Heavy rain warnings are in place for parts of Fiordland and Westland as well as the headwaters of Canterbury and Otago where strong winds drive the rain over to the eastern side of the Main Divide.

MetService meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane said, “Those unsettled northwesterlies will give the second half of the week a very spring-like feel. Keep an eye on MetService channels for any updated severe weather information in the coming days.”
