Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton declared a state of emergency for the Selwyn District at 5.39am on Thursday morning following advice from Environment Canterbury’s flood controller.
The decision comes as rivers across the district continue to rise, causing significant surface flooding, including on key roads. Residents of the Upper Selwyn Huts are being asked to self-evacuate as a precaution due to flooding risks from the Selwyn River.
“We’re asking people in vulnerable areas to take precautionary steps now to stay safe,” a Selwyn District Council spokesperson said.
In response, 250 sandbags have been distributed to specific properties in West Melton, Doyleston, and Leeston. Community sandbag stations were also set up in Sheffield and Glentunnel on Wednesday evening.
Coes Ford and other fords throughout the district have been closed. Several roads are also impassable due to surface flooding. A full list of road closures is available on the Selwyn District Council website.
Persistent heavy rain is continuing to fall across the region, and residents are being urged to take extra care while driving, particularly during school and work commutes.
A conserve water notice remains in place for Acheron, Arthur’s Pass, Dalethorpe, and Hororata water supplies. Residents in these areas are being asked to conserve water until the systems are fully restored.
A heavy rain warning remains in effect until 6pm Thursday 1 May. Residents are advised to monitor the MetService website for weather updates.
