SPCA has launched a nationwide fundraising campaign offering New Zealanders the chance to double their support for vulnerable animals during a 24 hour donation drive.
The charity’s “A Furever Home Giving Day” begins on Wednesday 18 March, with every donation matched dollar for dollar for one day only.
SPCA Chief Executive Officer Todd Westwood said the matching initiative had been made possible through support from Petdirect and a bequest from the late Peter Maclean.
“Tomorrow morning, our A Furever Home Giving Day begins and for 24 hours only every donation will be matched dollar for dollar,” Westwood said.
“That means your impact for animals will be doubled.”
SPCA said thousands of animals currently in its care across New Zealand were waiting for treatment, rehabilitation and adoption into permanent homes.
Many animals required surgery, medical treatment or behavioural rehabilitation before they were ready to be adopted.
“Right now thousands of animals in SPCA’s care are waiting for safety, treatment, reassurance and a loving home,” Westwood said.
“Some need surgery. Some need weeks of rehabilitation. Some simply need time to learn humans can be kind.”
Funds raised during the 24 hour campaign will go toward veterinary treatment, shelter, bedding, enrichment programmes and socialisation to prepare animals for adoption.
Westwood encouraged supporters to donate early during the campaign.
“I truly believe our community is going to make tails wag all across New Zealand tomorrow,” he said.
Donations made through SPCA’s Giving Day page will be matched for the full 24 hour period while the campaign runs.
