State Highway 73 between Springfield and Arthur’s Pass has reopened after an overnight closure caused by snow, ice, and a stranded truck.
The highway was shut about 10pm on Monday as wintry conditions made the route unsafe, with snowfall and ice affecting sections of the road, a New Zealand Transport Agency spokesperson said.
By Tuesday morning, a truck had become stuck on the route, delaying efforts to reopen the highway.
Contractors worked to recover the vehicle and clear the road, with the truck now removed and the highway fully reopened to all traffic.
Drivers are still being urged to take extra care, as snow and icy patches are likely to remain.
Motorists had earlier been advised to delay travel or take an alternative route, with the detour via State Highway 7 adding around four hours to the journey and also affected by snow.
MetService said up to 4cm of snow could settle on Porters Pass above 800 metres, with up to 2cm expected on Lewis Pass through to 9pm, along with a chance of further snow flurries overnight into Wednesday morning.
Another update is expected later today if conditions change.
