Severe gale northwesterlies with damaging gusts of 130 km/h in exposed places has been forecast for the Canterbury High Country.
Metservice said this forecast remains in place until Sunday evening.
It said strong wind gusts could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures.
Driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.
A strong wind watch is in place for Christchurch, Canterbury Plains and Banks Peninsula
Northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places until Sunday evening.
