Canterbury motorists are being advised to allow extra travel time next week, with night works at Rolleston and the next stage of repairs to a flood damaged section of State Highway 1 south of Kaikōura.

NZ Transport Agency’s latest maintenance update covers planned roadworks from Saturday 10 to Friday 16 October.

At Rolleston, crews will install 600 metres of bollards along the southbound shoulder of SH1 north of the Hoskyns Road intersection on Sunday 11 and Monday 12 October.

Work will take place between 9pm and 4.30am, with stop/go traffic management for southbound vehicles only. Delays of less than five minutes are expected.

Construction is also continuing on the southbound side of the highway to prepare for road widening, utility relocations and a new bridge.

The southbound lane merge has shifted closer to the Weedons Road interchange. While SH1 remains open, the lane reduction is causing delays during the afternoon peak between 4pm and 6pm. The agency suggested motorists consider Levi Road as an alternative.

North of Christchurch, repairs to the Conway River washout are entering their final stages after flooding in July damaged SH1 south of Kaikōura.

Crews have been rebuilding the lane that fell into the river. From Monday 12 October, they will begin joining the rebuilt section to the existing road.

Stop/go traffic lights will operate around the clock, with delays of up to 20 minutes expected.

The agency said it remained on track to restore two lanes in late October, subject to weather and construction conditions.

Nearby, KiwiRail bridge repairs at the Conway railway underpass at Claverley Road are expected to begin next week. A three way stop/go system will operate, with delays of up to five minutes.

Further north, road rebuilding about five kilometres north of the Clarence River will run from 12 October to 19 November.

Crews will work between 7am and 7pm, Monday to Saturday, but stop/go controls and a temporary 30km/h speed limit will remain in place around the clock. Drivers should allow an extra 10 minutes.

In Mid Canterbury, repairs to cracks, potholes and other damage ahead of resurfacing are scheduled between Ashburton and Hinds from 12 to 18 October. Work will take place on weekdays between 6am and 5pm, with stop/go controls, a 30km/h limit and delays of up to five minutes.

Work at the SH77 intersection with Rooneys Road is scheduled to continue through 11 October, with delays of up to 10 minutes.

In South Canterbury, a section of SH82 at Grassy Hills will be rebuilt from 12 October to 27 November. Weekday work will run from 6am to 5pm, with stop/go controls, a 30km/h limit and delays of up to 10 minutes.

Traffic at the SH82 Waihao North River Bridge has moved onto one lane of the new bridge while replacement work continues. Temporary traffic lights and a 30km/h limit remain in place.
