Rolleston commuters are set to gain significantly improved public transport options from next month, thanks to a new partnership between Metro and Bentley Coachlines.
From 1 September, the two operators will begin a six-month trial of direct commuter buses between Rolleston and Christchurch, boosting weekday trips from four to 16 in each direction. The initiative will introduce two new routes, 84 Rolleston Direct West and 85 Rolleston Direct East, with a coordinated timetable to ensure the services complement each other.
Public transport general manager Stewart Gibbon said the collaboration is a direct response to public demand. “We know from ongoing customer feedback and submissions on our recent Annual Plan that there is strong demand for better services to and from Rolleston,” he said. “This trial will not only boost the number of direct services, but it will provide easier access to public transport for residents. We expect the introduction of early morning services will be especially helpful for morning shift workers.”
Bentley Coachlines, which operates privately without ratepayer funding, will run 12 of the 16 daily trips in each direction. These services will not be part of the Metro network, meaning Metrocards, free transfers, and concessions will not apply. Instead, Bentley will charge a flat fare of $3.50 to $4, accepting contactless payments and cash.
All services will stop at existing Metro Route 85 bus stops at 10-minute intervals. At the Rolleston end, Bentley trips will alternate between the town’s east and west sides on a “hail and ride” basis, making it easier for passengers to board closer to home.
Metro will continue to operate four services each way, with updated timings to fit the new schedule. Staff from both Metro and Bentley Coachlines will be on hand before the launch to speak with passengers and provide details about the changes.
More information, including the combined timetable, will be available on the Metro website next week.
