Residents at a mental health and addiction support facility in Christchurch have been temporarily relocated after a fire broke out on Tuesday morning.

Ten people required medical attention following the incident at the Pathways residence on Warrington Street in Mairehau.

Three people were taken to Christchurch Hospital, one in a serious condition and two in a moderate condition.

The remaining seven suffered minor injuries and did not require hospital transport.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 8.11am, with firefighters from Christchurch City Station, arriving to find a blaze on the ground floor.

The fire was upgraded to a second alarm, with extra crews from the Redwood and ANZAC fire stations responding.

The blaze was brought under control by 8.27am.

The mental health and drug action organisation Pathways referred Chris Lynch Media to Health New Zealand for comment.

A spokeswoman said, “this morning there was a small fire in a building that is leased by a community mental health service provider in Christchurch.

“The fire was quickly contained and extinguished by Fire and Emergency New Zealand, and residents and staff were safely evacuated.

“We are supporting residents who have been temporarily relocated. Their wellbeing remains our top priority.”

She confirmed all those taken to hospital have since been discharged.

The cause of the fire is not believed to be suspicious.
