Residents evacuated near large North Canterbury Fire

(22:30) Residents near a large fire in North Canterbury have been told to evacuate.

15 crews, alongside a bulldozer, are fighting the fire in Waikari Valley.

A spokesperson said the fire is moving through difficult terrain.

Residents along Shell Rock Road are being evacuated as a precaution.

An evacuation centre has been set up at Waipara Hall.

Fire and Emergency crews were first alerted to the fire just after 8pm. It is moving through gorse and scrub valley.

There is currently no threat to any structures.

The public is asked to avoid the area.

Two helicopters have been called into assist at fire light on Monday morning.
