A red strong wind warning is now in place for Canterbury, with severe gales expected to batter the region from 10pm tonight through until Sunday afternoon.

The warning covers areas about and west of the foothills, as well as locations west of State Highway 1 south of the Rakaia River.

MetService is forecasting damaging northwesterly gusts of up to 150 kilometres an hour in exposed places.

Authorities say there is a threat to life from flying debris and falling trees. Powerlines, roofs, and roads are at risk, with destructive winds likely to cause widespread damage and dangerous driving conditions. Significant disruption to transport and power supply is also expected.

Fire and Emergency is urging residents to take extra precautions, including tying down or sheltering outdoor furniture and securing trampolines. High sided vehicles are advised to avoid travel in the affected areas.

Crews are also reminding the public to check old burn piles, turning them over to ensure no smouldering embers remain. They warn that in gale force winds, a reignited fire could be devastating.

The warning remains in place until 3pm Sunday.
