Christchurch Airport is set for a bumper summer with Qantas announcing a major increase in trans-Tasman services, including a 47 percent rise in flights to Sydney and a 26 percent jump in flights to Melbourne.
The boost comes as part of a broader 20 percent uplift in Qantas’ trans-Tasman schedule, running from 15 December 2025 to 26 January 2026. The airline will operate up to seven extra flights a week to Sydney and up to three more to Melbourne, with Christchurch Airport securing a large share of the additional capacity.

Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Justin Watson
Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Justin Watson said the move highlights the airline’s confidence in the region.
“This is fantastic news; it shows Qantas recognises the strength of Christchurch and the South Island market,” Watson said. “These extra flights are a win for tourism, trade and travel. They’ll help businesses thrive and give Kiwis even more options.”

Christchurch Airport’s General Manager Aeronautical Development Gordon Bevan said the uplift will bring economic benefits across the region.

“Aussies can’t get enough of the South Island, and now it’s even easier for them to fly straight here. More flights mean more visitors, more spending, and more benefits for our economy,” he said.
