A group pro-Palestinian protestors gathered inside a Rebel Sports store in Christchurch in Sunday to voice their concerns.
John Minto, the Chair of Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa, criticised Rebel Sports for stocking Puma products, accusing Puma of being complicit in what he termed as “enablers of Israeli genocide in Gaza”
The demonstrators displayed a prominent banner declaring “Stop the Genocide,” to emphasise their message.
This protest in Christchurch was a part of a wider international effort aimed at reducing sales of companies linked financially to Israel.
It follows Saturday’s large protest through central Christchurch, with had a similar message.
Representatives of the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) Movement highlighted their stance, stating, “Companies like HP, PUMA, and Marvel either support or indirectly contribute to Israel’s military occupation and apartheid policies.
Puma is the official kit supplier to the Israel national football team.
However, the German company said last month “the company “does not have any other official connection or association with any other Israeli Soccer club team – neither in mainland Israel or in settlements,” beyond the branded equipment it supplies to the Israeli National soccer teams to compete in international competitions.
“PUMA does not support soccer teams in settlements nor does its Israeli distributor have branches in settlements. PUMA continues to support and outfit athletes from all backgrounds, regardless of race, colour, creed, religion, sexual orientation and national origin.
As a brand concerned only with the power that sport has to bring people together, PUMA does not support any political direction, political parties or governments. We welcome the opportunity to help everyone compete in sports no matter who they are or where they are from.”
