Police are urging motorists to take extra care on New Zealand roads this King’s Birthday weekend, warning those who drive dangerously should expect to see flashing red and blue lights.

Acting Director of Road Policing, Inspector Peter McKennie, said far too many families have already been devastated by preventable crashes this year.

“There’s no excuse for anyone to drive dangerously or carelessly, endangering their lives or others regardless of the day of the year,” McKennie said.

“So many of the crashes we’ve attended this year have been preventable, and that’s a tragedy. It’s horrific for families, friends, and first responders.”

Police will have a strong presence across the country, with additional officers patrolling both highways and back roads under the ‘anywhere, anytime’ approach.

“We’re especially focused on long weekends when we know there’s more traffic and an increased risk,” McKennie said. “If you’re breaking the rules, you’ll get our attention, and you’ll get a ticket.”

Police are targeting four key risk factors that contribute to deaths and serious injuries: not wearing seatbelts, impaired driving through alcohol or drugs, distracted driving including mobile phone use, and excessive speed.

“These are the behaviours we know cost lives,” McKennie said. “A split-second decision can be the difference between life and death.”

He urged drivers to be patient, drive to the conditions, and take extra care.

“Just because you’re a good driver doesn’t mean the next person is. Drive in a way that allows you to respond safely to the unexpected,” he said.

“We’re doing our best, but we need people to take greater responsibility on the road. If you’re travelling this weekend, do everything you can to keep yourself and others safe.”
