Police have shot dead a dog following an incident on Ferry Road

Superintendent Lane Todd, Christchurch Metro Area Commander said police were called just after 2pm today to a Ferry Road property to a report that someone had slashed another person’s tyre with a knife.

It was the Ferry Motel.

“Police attended armed as a precaution.”

He said during the arrest of a man at the address, a dog came from inside and attacked a police dog.

He said officers attempted to use spray and a Taser to subdue the dog, but these were unsuccessful, and the dog was subsequently shot by police.

Superintendent Lane Todd said it was immediately taken to a local vet for treatment, but unfortunately has since died.

The Police dog was checked by a vet and its injuries are not life-threatening.

He said police never take the shooting of an animal lightly, but it is sometimes necessary to ensure the safety of our staff, Police dogs, and members of the public.

Chris Lynch Media understands the offender got angry after his neighbour for refusing to open his front door, he then threatened the neighbour with a knife, before slashing his car tyres.

It’s understood the resident has a history of harassing other tenants.

The back section of the motel has been cordoned off by police.
