A person has been seriously injured after a car crashed into a traffic light at a busy Christchurch intersection on Friday morning.

A police spokeswoman told Chris Lynch Media officers received a report of the crash at the intersection of Linwood Avenue and Aldwins Road about 7.45AM.

A St John spokesperson told Chris Lynch Media an ambulance and a rapid response unit were sent to the scene.

The patient was treated in a serious condition and taken to Christchurch Hospital.

Police said the road was being cleared and Christchurch City Council had been advised about the damaged traffic light.
