A person has died following the crash last night on State Highway 1/Rakaia Highway.

The two-vehicle crash was reported to police around 7:20pm.

A police spokesman said one person died at the scene, another person has received serious injuries and was taken to Christchurch Hospital.

The Serious Crash Unit attended the scene, and the circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.

A rescue helicopter was also called to the scene.
