Nearly 2,000 Christchurch properties were left without power this morning as temperatures plunged to minus 1 degree.

Residents in Avonhead, Broomfield, Burnside, Hyde Park, Ilam, Russley, and Upper Riccarton were impacted.

Power was cut at 6:28 AM.

By 8.20AM, power had been restored to all properties.

Orion described the outrage as “unplanned.”

A spokesperson told the cause of the power cut was due to a cable fault .

“All properties have now been restored.”
