A 29-year-old man is due to appear in Christchurch District Court today following a police chase this morning.

A police spokeswoman says officers attempted to stop a vehicle on Wainui Street about 8:30am.

She said the driver fled and the incident was very quickly abandoned by police due to the manner of driving.

A short time later the vehicle crashed into a stationary vehicle at the intersection of Middleton Road and Suva Street.

The driver fled on foot and was taken into custody.

He has been charged with failing to stop, reckless driving, driving while disqualified, possessing an offensive weapon, possessing methamphetamine, unlawful interference/getting into a vehicle.

A second person was in the vehicle and has not yet been located.

Ambulance was not required.
