It was a stunning, crisp Saturday morning in New Brighton, Christchurch. Cold, yes, but that was exactly the point.

More than a hundred people gathered at New Brighton Beach for the Midwinter Polar Plunge, an event timed with the winter solstice and organised by the New Zealand Antarctic Society.

“This is something we’ve done for years as Antarcticans,” said digital content creator and Antarctica influencer Matty Jordan.

“But this is the first time we’ve held it here for the community, a way to feel connected to our friends down on the ice.”

The event was also supported by Step Ahead Trust, a Christchurch organisation that works with people facing mental health challenges.

Participants said it was about more than just the icy thrill.

Heathcote Councillor Sara Templeton was there and said, “It’s the midwinter solstice. A perfect time for a midwinter swim and to celebrate Christchurch’s connection to Antarctica.”

She said Christchurch was one of five Antarctic gateway cities, with many scientists passing through on their way south.

“I’ve been to Antarctica myself and done a Ross Sea swim. If I can do that, I can do this.”

As the call was given, a wave of brave swimmers sprinted into the ocean. Cheers echoed across the sand, and despite the biting temperature, many emerged smiling.

One regular said, “I swim every day. Even in winter. It connects me to nature, and the mental health benefits are huge.”

Others agreed, saying there is science to support the mental and physical health benefits of cold water immersion.

Jordan, who spent 450 days in Antarctica including a full winter in 2023, said the solstice was a powerful moment.

“It’s one of my favourite days of the year down there. Just an amazing place to be.”

And maybe, just maybe, that was the point of it all. A bit of courage. A bit of joy. And a reminder that even in the coldest moments, there is power in simply showing up.
