10.20PM A shooting has occurred at Bondi Beach in Sydney, with police confirming multiple people have been shot during what a witness said was a Hanukkah gathering of the Jewish community.

Emergency services flooded the area shortly after 6.40 pm after reports of gunfire near a park and car park close to the beach.

Police and paramedics were seen working in a grassy area near the foreshore.

ABC reporter Sean Tariq Goodwin, who was at Bondi, said a large number of emergency service personnel and civilians were gathered at the scene, describing it as very active and confronting.

Goodwin said he spoke with a man who witnessed the shooting and was attending the gathering with his family.

The witness said he saw the shooters standing on a bridge near the car park and said they were dressed in black.

The man said the attackers opened fire on people gathered for the event, describing the scene as hell on earth.

He said he shielded his family and escaped as quickly as possible. He estimated the incident lasted about 10 minutes.

The witness said people appeared to be lying on the ground in pools of blood after being shot. He said the experience was incredibly shocking.

Police later confirmed the active shooters had been neutralised and there was no ongoing threat to the public.

Another ABC reporter at the scene said police had told media there were 2 shooters and both had been neutralised.

Police said the situation remained active, with emergency services continuing to respond, and urged members of the public to stay away from the area and remain at home.

Authorities said they believed there were multiple fatalities, but formal confirmation was still pending as police worked to clarify details.
