A man has died following a hunting incident near Lords River on Stewart Island on Saturday.

Police said they were alerted around midday and a Search and Rescue team was deployed to the island by helicopter.

The man was found deceased at the scene, Detective Sergeant Mark McCloy said.

An investigation is underway, including speaking with others who were in the area at the time.

The Coroner has been advised.

Police have not released any further details in relation to the incident.
