A man has been arrested after a fatal crash in Sheffield.

Police said the two vehicle collision happened on State Highway 73 at the intersection with Deans Road at around 2:50pm on Wednesday.

A police spokesperson said a 32 year old Swiss national has been charged with careless driving causing death.

He is due to appear in Christchurch District Court today.

Police said their thoughts remain with the family of the person who died.
