Strong winds have pushed a scrub fire two kilometres into a forestry plantation in the South Island’s Mackenzie Country.
NewstalkZB news reports Mt Cook Road is closed to the public while four helicopters and two aircraft fight the fire on the route towards the Dusky Trail.
The blaze started just before 11.30 this morning.
A Fire and Emergency spokesman says very windy conditions are making it difficult to control the fire which spread quickly into the plantation.
He says police have closed State Highways 80 and 8 to the public.
Fire crews from Burkes Pass, Twizel, Omarama, Otematata, Lake Tekapo, and Timaru are battling the blaze.
