A kindergarten in Oamaru has been evacuated following a nearby fire.

A witness told Chris Lynch Media parents grabbed as many children as they could and placed them into cars to move them away from the area.

Chris Lynch Media understands the fire started along railway tracks and has since spread to trees near Waitaki Boys’ High School.

Several roads have been blocked off while crews deal with the fire.

Multiple Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews are at the scene.
