Fire crews in Kaikōura have made significant progress in containing the fires that have ravaged the region over the past several days, thanks to a drop in wind conditions overnight.

Speaking with Chris Lynch Media, Assistant National Commander Ken Cooper said firefighters took advantage of calmer weather this morning, deploying helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft to suppress hotspots and before a worsening weather forecast later today.

“This reprieve in the wind has given us the upper hand,” he said. “We’re working hard to get everything under control while the conditions are in our favour.”

Mr Cooper said one of the large fires began after driftwood from an earlier bonfire on the beach was left unattended.

“Strong winds picked up embers from the bonfire, igniting a significant fire that quickly spread. Crews worked through the night to bring it under control.

“There have also been other incidents throughout the week involving outdoor fires where people believed the flames were extinguished, only for them to flare up again,” Cooper added.

“Most of these have involved people burning green waste or cuttings they’ve collected on their properties.”

According to Fire and Emergency NZ, 14 structures were destroyed or damaged in the fires. These include five residential homes, several sheds, and caravans. Some residents were forced to evacuate, and many are now returning to assess the damage to their properties.

With more challenging weather expected later today, authorities are urging residents to avoid lighting any fires and to report any signs of smoke immediately. A total fire ban remains in place across the Kaikōura district.

“We’re asking everyone to stay vigilant,” said Cooper. “Don’t assume your fire is out just because you can’t see flames. Embers can smoulder for hours and reignite in the right conditions.”
