A house in Birdlings Flat has been destroyed by fire.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand Southern shift manager Daryl Ball said crews received the first call about 3.45pm on Thursday.

Multiple fire appliances were sent to the property on Lake Terrace Road, which was fully involved when firefighters arrived.

Ball said while the fire had been extinguished, one appliance and a tanker remained at the scene at 9PM, as crews worked to extinguish hot spots.

No one was injured in the blaze.

Chris Lynch Media understands scene guard has been arranged to monitor the property overnight.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
