Several homes in South Nelson have been evacuated  after police discovered a suspicious item at a property on Waimea Road.

Police said they were called to the address about 5.20pm after the item was left at the property and an alleged threat was made.

A cordon was established and the New Zealand Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called in to assess the item.

As a precaution, homes on part of Waimea Road and Renwick Place were evacuated.

A temporary evacuation centre has been set up at Victory Community Centre on Totara Street for affected residents.

Police said they appreciated the public’s patience while they worked to ensure the area was safe.
