Christchurch Police have blocked off an inner city street following a serious assault at 2pm.

A police spokeswoman says a man has been assaulted near Hereford Street and Stanmore Road.

He has suffered injuries to his arm and back and is in a serious condition in hospital.

Witnesses report hearing gunshot noises but this has not been confirmed by police.

A Police spokeswoman says they’re making enquiries in the area currently and more information will be released when it becomes available.

“We would like to hear from anyone who may have information in relation to this assault.”
