Health New Zealand has issued a health warning after untreated sewage has been discharged into Corsair Bay.
Authorities have advised the discharge entered the water near Corsair Bay, prompting concerns about water quality and public health.
Public Health Medicine Specialist Dr Imogen Evans said water quality at the affected site was not considered suitable for recreational use.
“Water quality at the affected site is not considered suitable for recreational uses including swimming because of the risk to health from the bacteria and other pathogens,” Evans said.
“Water contaminated by human matter may contain a range of disease causing micro organisms such as viruses, bacteria and protozoa,” she said.
Health New Zealand has advised people to avoid swimming, paddling, or any other contact with the water in the affected area.
“Eating fish or shellfish from these sites should be avoided,” Evans said.
“If fish are eaten, remove the gut and liver and wash in clean water before cooking.”
The warning will remain in place until further notice while authorities continue to monitor water quality.
