Halswell is set to get a new primary school, with confirmation from Education Minister Erica Stanford that Milns Road School will open in 2027.
Banks Peninsula MP Vanessa Weenink shared the update on Wednesday, welcoming the decision to address strong roll growth in the area.
In a letter to Dr Weenink, Minister Stanford said she had approved the establishment of a new Year 1 to 8 full primary school under the Education and Training Act 2020.
The school will open with an initial roll of 250 students.

“The newly established school will be governed by an Establishment Board.
When appointed, the Board will work with the Ministry of Education and the local community to prepare the new school for opening,” Stanford said.
She said the Halswell community was experiencing high population growth, and the new school would help ease pressure on existing local schools.
The Ministry of Education will continue to monitor capacity across the area to ensure students have access to quality education.
Land for the Milns Road school site was previously purchased by the then Labour Government in 2005, as part of long-term schooling strategy planning to accommodate population growth in the Halswell and Aidanfield areas.
