Global events have forced the withdrawal of all modern military aircraft from next weekend’s Warbirds Over Wanaka, including the highly anticipated US Air Force F 22 Raptor Display Team.

Organisers said the decision was completely outside their control and they were only informed mid afternoon.

“World events and their impact in NZ are behind the decision and while it’s a blow, especially not having the fast jets, the Warbirds team still has a packed programme which will wow the thousands heading to Wanaka next week.

“We never gaurantee ANY aircraft at the airshow as they can be unavailable for many reasons right up to the day of the airshow.”

Despite the absence of modern military aircraft, organisers said the show would still deliver a strong line up.

“We have a full programme planned for next weekend with plenty of acts which will blow you away.”

They confirmed several headline attractions remain locked in, including the American Eagles, a Mk. XI Spitfire from the United Kingdom already in the country, the debut of the world’s only Yak 7B fighter, and the Southern Force Pitts Special aerobatic team appearing for the first time.

Additional aircraft set to feature include the Biggin Hill Trust Spitfire, P 51 Mustang and Avenger, along with gliders, helicopters and a first Wanaka appearance by the Airtruk.

Organisers made it clear the event will go ahead as planned and refunds will only be issued if the airshow is cancelled.

They said a revised programme would be released in the coming days, adding the event would still offer an exciting experience for families and aviation fans.

“Anyone who knows us knows it will be an amazing event for the whole family.”
