Gasson Street in Sydenham is closed while emergency services respond to a serious incident involving a train and a pedestrian.

St John said it was notified of a crash involving a train on Gasson Street.

One ambulance, one rapid response unit and an operations manager responded to the scene.

Police said emergency services were alerted shortly after 4.10pm to an incident involving a pedestrian.

The road is closed between Carlyle Street and Moorhouse Avenue and is expected to remain closed for some time.

The Serious Crash Unit is at the scene.

Witnesses reported seeing a stationary train on the tracks near the Gasson Street railway crossing, along with firefighters, ambulance crews and multiple police vehicles.

People gathered near the scene appeared visibly shaken, one witness said.

A person who works nearby told chrislynchmedia.com that “the train’s horn didn’t stop”.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the circumstances of the crash or the condition of the pedestrian.

Motorists and members of the public are being asked to avoid the area.
