A flood warning remains in place for Canterbury alpine rivers this morning, with Environment Canterbury saying floodwaters are now receding.

Rain has stopped in the alpine areas, but high flows are still moving through the lower parts of the major river systems, including the Waimakariri River.

The regional council said its teams are continuing to monitor river levels and flood protection infrastructure throughout the day.

Farmers near flood-affected rivers are being urged to keep a close eye on conditions as water levels continue to drop.

Residents in Kairaki and Pines Beach are being advised to stay prepared in case an evacuation becomes necessary during the next high tide cycle.

The council said the situation will be updated by 10am.
