“Our crews worked tirelessly and were able to save five houses from being destroyed,” Cooper said.

He extended his sympathy to those affected. “I’d like to extend my sympathy to the people impacted by these fires today,” he said.

Crews were expected to remain on standby overnight before returning to the firegrounds in the morning.

“We expect a comparative lull in the wind tomorrow before it is forecast to strengthen significantly again on Wednesday night, and our crews will use this opportunity to make sure the fires are contained and extinguished,” Cooper said.

Police said State Highway 1 between Ward and Kaikoura would remain closed overnight, and motorists should delay travel or take an alternative route where possible.
