Firefighters are responding to a large vegetation fire about 4.5km southeast of Hanmer Springs.

A Fire and Emergency Canterbury spokesperson said there are no properties are currently threatened.

Crews are currently trying to access the fire, although roads are blocked by downed trees.

The winds are too strong to use aircraft at present, the spokesperson said.

State Highway 7A is closed at Medway Road.
