A fire that damaged a garage, a van, and a sleep-out two neighbouring houses in Northcote is being treated as suspicious.

Emergency crews were called to the blaze on Hoani Street and Wilmot Street at 5pm last night.

The granddaughter of the occupant who owns the garage said fire investigators have been inspecting the damage today.

Kimberley Pullan said “the fire started on the fence line and spread to the garage of the neighbouring property.

“It is being treated as suspicious at this stage and now we must wait for the police investigation. They have taken some samples away for testing.”

A police spokesman couldn’t confirm any details of the fire.

Last night a Fire and Emergency spokesman said the fire was a timely reminder to install smoke alarms in garages and sleepouts.
