A man has been arrested within minutes of an alleged attempted burglary at a New Brighton property.

A police spokesperson said they were called to a Travis Road house at 4.45am on Tuesday after a resident reported someone was trying to break into a shed.

The dog unit was sent to the scene and, 6 minutes later, officers found a 60 year old man nearby.

He was arrested and charged with burglary.

The man was due to appear in the Christchurch District Court on Friday.
