Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews responded this afternoon to a fast-moving vegetation fire in Hapuku, near Kaikoura, after reports of a hedge ablaze on Bay Paddock Road at 1:36pm.
Fanned by strong winds, the fire quickly spread through the area, with embers sparking multiple spot fires nearby.
The blaze rapidly escalated, threatening nearby homes and prompting evacuations.
At least 12 fire trucks from across the region, including units from Kaikōura, Waiau, Conway Flat, Flaxbourne, Seddon, Awatere, and Blenheim have been deployed to the scene.
Fire crews have successfully contained the main fire, but efforts continue to manage flare-ups and protect property.
One structure has caught fire, and firefighters are actively working to defend another under threat.
Residents in the immediate vicinity were advised to evacuate as a precaution, and emergency services remain on high alert given the volatile wind conditions.
