A new Woolworths supermarket has been approved for Madras Street in St Albans.
Located on a 1.44-hectare block formerly used as the Orion works depot, the large-scale site has remained vacant and fenced for several years.

The approved resource consent decision grants Woolworths New Zealand Limited permission to establish a new commercial centre anchored by a full-service supermarket and supported by small-scale retail shops.
The development will include a 3,350 square metre supermarket with a click-and-collect facility, along with 860 square metres of small-format retail at ground level and 530 square metres of non-retail space on the first floor.
The site will also feature a publicly accessible courtyard and 223 carparks, with two vehicle access points from Madras Street and a central pedestrian walkway.
Construction timelines and specific store tenancies have yet to be confirmed.
