One of the country’s largest solar farms will soon be built north of Darfield.

NZ Clean Energy’s (NZCE) Darfield Solar & Energy Storage Project has gained full consent from Selwyn District Council, paving the way for 100 new jobs.

Located 1.5 km north of Darfield, next to Fonterra’s Kimberley Factory, this major solar development will be one of New Zealand’s largest.

The 148-hectare site will deliver enough clean energy for 23,000 homes annually and cutting 12,000 tonnes of carbon emissions yearly.

“We’re excited to bring this project to life, creating jobs and clean energy for Canterbury,” said George Hughes, NZCE’s COO.

Construction for the Darfield solar project starts in early 2026.

Founded in 2022, NZCE develops large-scale solar and storage projects, with a pipeline exceeding 1.5 GW. The company focuses on sustainable energy and community collaboration.
