Progress results showed Dan Gordon had won Waimakariri’s mayoralty race for another term.

Mayor-elect Gordon received 13,639 votes, while his challenger Paul Williams received 4,304 votes.

In the upcoming term, he would be joined by new councillors Wendy Doody, Bruce McLaren, Shona Powell, and Tim Bartle. Returning councillors included Tim Fulton, Niki Mealings, Jason Goldsworthy, Joan Ward, Brent Cairns, and Philip Redmond.

Gordon said he was humbled to be re-elected as Mayor for a third term.

“Thank you to Waimakariri residents for re-electing me as your Mayor. It is humbling to be representing our District for a third term. I will continue to work hard for all of our communities, while listening carefully to your concerns and representing you to the very best of my ability,” he said.

“Congratulations to all of those who have been elected throughout Waimakariri whether it be Council or Community Board. We still have a lot of work to do to keep Waimakariri thriving and moving forward. I am looking forward to working with you all. Together we will be working hard with our community to continue to make Waimakariri a positive and attractive place for residents to live, work and play.”

The Waimakariri District Council has two decision-making parts: the Council and Community Boards. Elections are held every three years for the positions of Mayor, ten Councillors, and 24 Community Board members.

The voter return was 37.08 percent, representing 18,225 votes, excluding those in transit and special votes. Not all ordinary votes had been counted, with some still being processed by the Electoral Officer.

A further update with preliminary results would be released on Sunday, and a full breakdown of results was expected next week.
