A cyclist has been seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle in Christchurch this afternoon.

A police spokesman told chrislynchmedia.com they were advised at 2.55pm to the crash at the intersection of Opawa Road and Shakespeare Road.

A St John said spokesman said they responded with an ambulance, a rapid response vehicle and an operations manager.

The cyclist was assessed at the scene before being transported to Christchurch Hospital in a serious condition.

Fire and Emergency crews were also called to the scene.

Police said the intersection was expected to be cleared and the road was still open.
