A Christchurch City Council staff report is recommending the Gloucester Street trial remain in place until October, when a decision on the long-term future of the street will be made.
The trial, which was 90 per cent funded through NZ Transport Agency’s Streets for People programme, aims to create a more people friendly environment.
At a meeting on Wednesday 1 May, councillors will consider whether or not to extend the trial until 31 October.
In December, speed “cushions planters, seating and paint were installed, and a speed limit of 10km/h implemented on the section between Colombo and Manchester Street.
Community views were collected over three-month trial period ending 18 March, along with technical data showing changes to vehicle, pedestrian and cyclist behaviours and speeds.
The council has made no secret of its preferred option, funding a street party, and handing out submission forms to attendees.
In a council news release it said “due to the volume of feedback and high-profile nature of the project, a Hearings Panel will be required to consider all the information and provide advice towards a decision on the long-term future of the street.”
