Police are investigating a series of copper thefts from irrigation systems across North Canterbury, with reported losses already exceeding $130,000.
Twelve incidents have been identified across Swannanoa, West Eyreton, Fernside, Oxford and Darfield.
Canterbury Rural Area Commander Inspector Peter Cooper said offenders appeared to be targeting copper power and control cabling from centre pivot and lateral irrigation systems for financial gain.
“Most irrigators remain dormant throughout winter and are not routinely inspected, so victims are only now discovering damage and reporting it.”
Cooper said the $130,000 figure did not include labour costs, contractor callouts, irrigation downtime and other consequential losses.
As farmers and property owners inspect and recommission irrigators for the coming season, police are urging anyone who discovers damage to report it.
“Anyone who notices damage should make a report to us.”
Reports can be made to Police through the 105 service, either by phone or online.
