Christchurch runner Morgan Bartrum has spent the week tackling a gruelling endurance challenge in Hagley Park to raise awareness of mental health.

The fundraiser, called the 617 Run for Hope, began on Monday at the Hagley Netball Courts.

Bartrum set himself the goal of running 617 kilometres in seven days, symbolising the 617 New Zealanders who lost their lives to suicide last year.

His original target was 100 kilometres a day, but by Saturday he had reached 340 kilometres.

He said the challenge had been both mentally and physically demanding. “Through all the long training runs and yarns with my mates, it became clear mental health is not an individual journey.”

Organisers have encouraged supporters to help by joining him on laps of the park, running or walking relay-style to contribute to the overall goal.

The challenge will conclude on Sunday with a community run and walk from 10am to 11am, followed by a final lap with Bartrum from 11am to 11.30am.

Members of the public are invited to take part in the last stages of the event at Hagley Park South.
