A 10-year-old from Christchurch has made disc golf history by becoming just the third person ever to win three or more junior world titles.

Sarah dominated the World Junior Disc Golf Championships in Emporia, Kansas, where she played five rounds in extreme heat reaching up to 40 degrees. She led from the very first round and extended her lead throughout the tournament.

Remarkably, she only recorded two bogeys for the entire event, something never achieved before.

She also earned the highest tournament rating ever for a 10-year-old girl with a score of 875 and secured the largest winning margin in the competition’s history.

Sarah also won the world title for the longest drive with a 95 metre throw, beating her nearest rival by 34 metres, and took out the world putting title.

The win follows her recent triumph at the US Women’s Championship, where she won the 10-year-old girls division by a massive 58 shots.

New Zealand also celebrated another major win with Alison Tweedle from Invercargill taking out the 15-year-old girls world title after a tense playoff. Alison is only the second New Zealander in history to win a junior world title. Sarah is the first.

“These two girls are amazing athletes and the disc golf world has certainly noticed,” said a spokesperson for New Zealand Disc Golf.

In a post after the win, Sarah said, “This is my third World Championship and my third win. The PDGA said only three people have ever won three or more in a row.”

“I want to thank all my cardmates for making this tournament so awesome, all my friends new and old. It’s hard only seeing you once a year.”
