Searchers have this afternoon located a downed light plane, near Mt Nicholson in the Southern Alps, after it went missing this morning.
The Rescue Coordination Centre says the plane was located by a Christchurch based rescue helicopter.
The light plane left Franz Josef at about 9 am this morning and was en route to Rangiora.
Air Traffic Control notified RCCNZ its assistance may be required at 11 am this morning. One person was on-board.

Due to inclement weather, it is currently too dangerous to access the area.
RCCNZ is currently coordinating with partner agencies on next steps for the response.
