One property on Aylmers Valley Road in Akaroa has been evacuated following a geotechnical assessment of cracks in Lighthouse Road and the surrounding land.
A Christchurch City Council spokesperson said several properties in the primary evacuation zone self-evacuated yesterday as a precaution.
“The assessment found there was no immediate danger to the evacuated properties or others in the area.
However, if conditions change, we may require houses further down to evacuate at short notice,” the spokesperson said.
The Council has now identified a secondary evacuation zone as a further precaution.
The area is bordered by Lighthouse Road, Onuku Road, and Aylmers Valley Road, and includes Newton Place.
Volunteers will be door knocking properties in the secondary zone this afternoon.
“We understand that some of these properties will be holiday homes and may not currently be occupied, so we will be leaving flyers with information and contact details,” the spokesperson said.

The Akaroa Health Centre also falls within the newly designated zone. Civil Defence has been in regular contact with the centre and evacuation plans are already in place, should they be needed.
Monitoring equipment will now be installed at the Lighthouse Road site to track any changes in land movement.
“With rainfall easing, we are not anticipating any significant land movement at this stage,” the spokesperson said.
