The Air Force Museum of New Zealand has soared to the top of the Children’s University league table, officially recognised as the most visited learning destination across Australasia.

Located in Wigram, the much-loved museum is one of 500 learning destinations involved in the Children’s University (CU) programme and has proudly held its place in the scheme for six years.

The achievement reflects the museum’s outstanding ability to ignite curiosity and deliver meaningful learning experiences outside the classroom.

Children’s University, supported regionally by Lincoln University and the University of Canterbury, provides young learners aged 7 to 14 with a “learning passport,” which is stamped as they complete fun and educational tasks at approved destinations.

The Air Force Museum’s free educational hunt has proven to be a clear favourite, inviting children to solve puzzles and answer questions that bring New Zealand’s military aviation history to life.

Museum Director Brett Marshall said he was thrilled with the news.

“We were equally surprised and delighted to learn that we are top of the charts,” he said. “The quizzes we provide have really struck a chord with young learners, and they’re the perfect gateway to exploring our aviation heritage.”

Marshall said the museum experience offers much more than a history lesson.

“We love the sense of awe and wonder that aircraft inspire in young people, not only about history but about engineering and aerospace as well. It’s incredibly rewarding to see education and inspiration come together in such a powerful way.”

With 89 Canterbury organisations taking part in the CU programme, the museum’s top ranking underscores its special place in the hearts of young learners and their families. As a trusted local institution, it continues to deliver enriching experiences that help shape the next generation of thinkers, dreamers, and innovators.
